Most trace elements have a sizeable gap between the recommended dose and the upper safety limit. Why Brazil nuts are a special case

The selenium content of plants depends on how much was present in the soil. Brazil nuts grow in soils exceptionally rich in this element, and the spread between batches is enormous — a portion from one packet can contain many times more selenium than an identical portion from another. Manufacturers usually don’t declare this, since they’re under no obligation to.

The practical takeaway, then, isn’t “eat exactly this many nuts”, but rather: this is a source with unpredictable content, so it isn’t suited to conscious selenium dosing. Eating handfuls of them every day over an extended period is one of the few realistic ways to exceed the upper limit for selenium through diet alone, without supplements.

Selenium and iodine work as a pair
